The Stories of Our Favourite Champagnes

    Moët & Chandon

Moët & Chandon, one of the world's most celebrated champagne houses, traces its origins to 1743 when Claude Moët founded the winery in Épernay, France. Initially focusing on domestic sales, Moët quickly expanded to international markets, establishing a reputation for producing exceptional sparkling wines. By the 19th century, the brand had become a favorite among European nobility, notably gaining the endorsement of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Moët & Chandon is renowned for its unique qualities, particularly its signature champagne, Moët Impérial. This iconic blend, created in 1869, is distinguished by its vibrant fruitiness, seductive palate, and elegant maturity. The champagne house's dedication to quality involves meticulous vineyard management, a rigorous selection process, and the artful blending of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay grapes.

The champagne's effervescence, fine bubbles, and consistent quality have made it a symbol of luxury and celebration. Moët & Chandon's commitment to innovation, such as pioneering the technique of disgorgement, ensures its champagnes maintain a perfect balance of taste and texture. In the 21st Century, Moët & Chandon continues to be a global ambassador of French art de vivre, embodying elegance, glamour, and a timeless sense of occasion.

    Veuve Clicquot

Veuve Clicquot, one of the most prestigious champagne houses, was founded in 1772 by Philippe Clicquot in Reims, France. The brand gained prominence under the leadership of Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin, the widow (veuve in French) of François Clicquot, who took over the business in 1805. Madame Clicquot is often credited with transforming the champagne industry through her innovation and entrepreneurship.

Madame Clicquot introduced several pioneering techniques, including the riddling table process, which improved the clarity and quality of champagne by efficiently removing sediment. This innovation led to the production of the first known vintage champagne in 1810. Her commitment to excellence and innovation earned her the title "La Grande Dame de la Champagne".

Veuve Clicquot champagnes are known for their robust structure, fine bubbles, and complex flavour profiles. The house's flagship blend, Brut Yellow Label, showcases a perfect balance of strength, silkiness, and aromatic intensity, combining Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay grapes. The champagne's distinct qualities include rich fruitiness, toasty notes, and a persistent finish.

Today, Veuve Clicquot continues to embody luxury and sophistication, maintaining its legacy of quality and innovation established by Madame Clicquot, and remains a symbol of celebration worldwide.

    G. H. Mumm

G.H. Mumm, one of the most renowned champagne houses, was established in 1827 by the Mumm family, originally winemakers from Germany. The winery is located in Reims, in the heart of France's Champagne region. The house quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality champagnes, and by the late 19th century, it was supplying royals and aristocrats across Europe.

One of the unique qualities of G.H. Mumm champagnes is their meticulous production process. The house's flagship champagne, Cordon Rouge, introduced in 1876, is known for its distinctive red ribbon, symbolising excellence. The blend primarily uses Pinot Noir grapes, which provide a robust structure and rich flavours, complemented by the elegance of Chardonnay and the fruitiness of Pinot Meunier.

G.H. Mumm champagnes are celebrated for their freshness, complexity, and vibrant acidity. The house employs traditional methods, including extended aging on the lees, which enhances the depth and texture of the champagne. This dedication to craftsmanship ensures a consistent quality that has earned G.H. Mumm a place at prestigious events and celebrations worldwide.

To this day, G.H. Mumm continues to innovate while honouring its heritage, making it a symbol of French luxury and refinement in the world of champagne.
